Dogs. Who doesn't love them? They are cute, charming, great listeners to all of your fussy problems and they are sometimes loyal than your friends. They are good pets to keep and play with.
But why does Islam prohibited Muslims from having dogs as their company and friends?
Anyway, it isn't only dogs but the same thing happens when it comes to pigs.
Honestly, all these years I only know that Muslims can't touch the dogs when they are wet. Muslims can't touch the saliva or when they are not dry and they better be away from them because it is considered to be ritually unclean. I do love dogs a lot and I like to see how they try to attract people's attention when they need love, playtime or food. Islam taught Muslims to love animals (including dogs and pigs and other animals that is known to be very dangerous to humans) and they were taught to not hurting them by any means.
The same thing as we were taught to like and respect others of different religions. We will never hurt them because Islam only taught of how to live in peace and harmony.
So, I've never been near one. I have seen a lot of dogs here in my place but I will only observe the dogs from far and love the way they barked and being lovable. ^_^
Below is a description I got online from an Arabian man of Mecca named Sheikh Hamza.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is perfectly acceptable to have dogs outside your home as guard dogs for your house, farm, property, animals, etc. It is preferred to not have them in the home in order to keep your home clean and pure for the reason of making salat (prayer) because the angels will be witnessing your salat, and Angels are known in Islam to dislike unclean places. AS such, it is a kind of respect for your angels to keep your area, room, apartment, or house (living space) clean and free from animal hairs, debris, dirt and even dust. Even owning an indoor cat is permissible if the cat is clean, house trained, and you clean up after it; if the cat is causing your home to be unclean then even a cat indoors (halal normally) is haram if it causes you health or cleanliness issues.
The fact is that in Islam the Prophet Mohammed Salli Allahu Alayhi Wasalam (Peace be upon him) liked dogs at first (I will paraphrase it) the reason we were taught about dogs and this issue is that he had one under his bed one night when an angel was to appear to him. The angel never showed because the puppy inadvertently caused his home to be unclean. The following night he removed the dog and cleaned the area the dog had been in and the angel appeared. This taught us that the SALIVA of a dog is impure. This is actually backed up by scientific fact that a plethora of bacteria can be found in dog saliva, even much more so that most other animals. Some scholars say the hair is considered unclean as well. I tend to disagree, but in the spirit of keeping yourself and your living area clean for obvious reason in medicine, science and Islam, it is better to keep them outside or not have them at all.
The only point to not liking dogs is that by touching them (usually getting the saliva on you) causes you to be in a state of impurity, ie unclean and as a Muslim we are taught a great deal about personal hygiene. It is actually mandatory to be clean and make Wudu (ablution cleansing of yourself) prior to prayer. As a Muslim it is preferred to go about your day in a state of holy cleanliness (in wudu).
In finishing, Islam gives you many allowances and Allah is known as Allah ah Raheem, in other words God the Merciful, and Allah knows best. May Allah subahanah wata'ala (Lord of everything) guide us all and guide those with out knowledge of Islam to the truth about Islam.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So it is known that touching dogs or pigs is not allowed in Islam because of the cleanliness that we all should take a big care of it in order to do things like pray/read the Holy Quran or others.
If you have touched dogs without intention to do that or when the dogs comes near you and lick you while you can't avoid staying away from them, DON'T WORRY!! Because Islam taught everything in the Quran. Islam doesn't want to make lives difficult for their people and Allah loves us so much that He tells everything in His book and asks us to follow it to the end.
Dogs/Pigs are considered to be the heaviest dirt that is needed to be cleaned in Islam.
Ways to clean the part of the body that has been contacted with the dogs/pigs/their saliva or dumping:
1) If it is your hand that the dog has licked, wash your hand with a mixture of soil+clean water once. It is encouraged to wipe your hand bare handed thoroughly with the mixture until you feel it is cleaned.
2) Wash your hand again with only clean water this time for SIX TIMES. Each time is encouraged to be wiped bare handed until you feel it is cleaned too.
Then, you're considered to be cleaned again like you've never touched the animals.
You can perform the prayer/Salah or reading Quran or anything that you want for the rest of the day and forward. You just need to finish the steps of cleaning your hand. Remember, one wash with soil+water and another six with only water.
InsyaAllah, everything will be just fine.
(I'll tell you guys about another things in Islam that is considered unclean in the next post, InsyaAllah. See you.) ^0^
